The Avenida Rio Branco, which is very busy during the week, is very quiet on weekends and evenings. As a commercial and touristy ar ea, the Centro is also home to the middle classes. This is the area closest to the international airport and it’s also where most of Rio de Janeiro’s historical decisions were made as it was the administrative seat of the Portuguese colony before Brasilia became the country’s capital in 1960.The Centro is a mix of the old and new, with colonial homes and modern buildings designed by Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, and Lucio Costa. Its official name is Praça Floriano Peixoto after Brazil’s second president. This is the heart of the business district.Until 1970, this was home to the Senate, in the Monroe Palace, which has since been destroyed. There are many fine examples of Be aux-Arts architecture including the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, the National Library of Brazil, and the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes.The area gets its name from the many cinemas which were built by Francisco Serrador. Cinelândia means “Cinemaland” as if it were a theme park.LapaBehind the heart of Centro, you can find the Lapa neighbourhood, famous for its nightlife. It’s also famous for the Santa Teresa Tram which runs over Lapa’s aqueduct. You’ll find large hotel complexes and better public transport than elsewhere in Rio de Janeiro. Unlike the beaches at Ipanema and Copacabana, this beach isn’t often visited by tourists.  The area gets its name from the Dutch explorer Olivier van Noort, who people thought was Flemish (Flamengo in Portuguese). Flamengo is also famous for its football team and you can find large green spaces which are perfect for relaxing in what is otherwise an urban area.UrcaThe Urca neighbourhood, at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain, is where you can take the cable car from to enjoy views over the city and see Christ the Redeemer. It’s considered the safest neighbourhood in the city. There’s also a statute of Chopin facing the sea, which was gifted to the city by its Polish inhabitants.LaranjeirasLaranjeiras is one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods in the city and is at the foot of the Corcovado mountain. Today it’s the seat of the federal government for the state of Rio de Janeiro.CopacabanaThis area is famous for its beach and it’s a lively area with many restaurants, bars, and cinemas. If you go to Rio, you have to visit it. You can’t miss Avenida Atlântica which runs alongside the beach. Ipanema beach has become more popular than Copacabana. The Ipanema neighbourhood is also the birthplace of bossa nova music.LeblonLeblon is another trendy neighbourhood, much like Ipanema. Additionally, the buildings are more like in American cities such as Miami, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles than the European design you find in the Central Zone.JacarepaguáThis is the 9th largest neighbourhood in Rio and the income inequality is even more evident here. On one side, you have a very wealthy population and on the other side, you'll find slums.Recreio dos BandeirantesThis relatively new neighbourhood is away from the influx of tourists in the city. This is where wealthy residents have made their homes. The buildings here aren’t as tall as the those in the neighbouring Barra da Tijuca. Here are a few tips and suggestions to make the scholarship search efficientand hopefully successful: Start early. It truly is never too early to start researching scholarship programsand freshman year is a great time to start getting familiar with what types of scholarships exist, the requirements and who typically wins those scholarships. The guidance counselor can be a great resource, but its helpful to start browsing sites like www.scholarships.com, www.fastweb.com and https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/scholarship-search also. Then, by the time your teen is ready to start applying, he or she will already be knowledgeable about the options and expectations. Search far and wide. Encourage your teen to utilize the aforementioned scholarship search engines, search for scholarships in the local community (foundations, local businesses and churches are good places to start) and make friends with the guidance counselor. Its worth emphasizing that the guidance counselors office probably learns about new scholarships all year long. If they have an online system or database, be sure your teen browses it regularly or registers to receive notifications of new scholarships or scholarship deadlines. Stopping by often to get to know the counselors is a good idea as well so that they are aware of your teens interests, target schools and career goals. Once your teen applies for financial aid and submits college applications, the guidance counselor can also help navigate any college-specific scholarships offered by the institutions to which your teen applies. Narrow things down. The scholarship search can quickly become overwhelming if your teen accumulates a list of hundreds of potential scholarships and doesnt know where to begin. This is where the importance of paying attention to criteria comes in. Your teen should take the same meticulous screening approach with other scholarships that he or she learns about. Be disciplined about applying. If your teen comes up with a list of 25 possible scholarships, he or she should create a spreadsheet with the names, application deadlines and contact information of each, and tackle five or 10 a week (arranging by deadline date). As new possibilities arise, add them to the spreadsheet and keep at it. Files for each scholarship with the details, essays submitted and more will keep your teen organized. With effort and diligence, your teen can place him or herself in the best position to win scholarships. The reality is that there is a lot of money available and your teen can increase his or her chances of scholarship success by continuing to work hard in school and applying to as many potential fit scholarships as possible.
